Over the weekend I was on the radio program of @readlandng and I was asked this question. I’ve decided to share here for the benefit of those who missed it
As the Easter holiday approaches, here are 3 important safety tips your children should know:
1) Ask permission from parent before accepting gifts
This is a period where children will be given chocolates, biscuit, candies and lots more from friends and well wishers. Abductors can also use that to gain the attention of a child. Teaching your kids to ask for permission before accepting gifts provides the needed time frame to avoid persons with ulterior motives
2) Teach them about their bodies and teach them to report if anyone tries to touch their private parts
So, holiday periods have the highest rates of safety incident and accidents. In terms of molestation, this happens because there are lots of visit to homes of families and friends. Some times, there are sleepovers too. You can only vouch for yourself and not others. Therefore teach your children about their bodies and to report if anyone trespasses on their bodies. When they report, make sure you act so they know they can trust you to act on their behalf.
3) Stay close to parents in public places
As happens always during holidays, there will be lots of visits to malls and parties. Teach children to stay close to you at all times and not wander away. Let them know your phone number so that if for some reason they wander away, they will be able to call you through the right authorities. Teach them that if they get lost, they should approach uniformed personnel to help them and not random adults.
