How to reduce the spread of COVID-19 in the workplace through Hand Hygiene

We are officially in flu season and COVID-19 is still very much around. How can you ensure that you are still SAFE? You must maintain HAND HYGIENE. This is a reminder that you cannot afford to get tired most especially when you know some of your colleagues are not particularly clean.

Do you remember when the lockdown started and how supermarkets would ensure that you wash your hands before entry or use a hand sanitizer? How many are still doing it? Even if others stop complying with safety precautions, YOU must continue and tell others to do same. Remember that people can get it from touching contaminated surfaces and touching their eyes, nose and mouth? Well, if you know the mode of transmission, you know how to break the chain

When should you practice hand hygiene?

  1. When hands are visibly dirty
  2. When hands are sticky
  3. When hands are not visibly dirty but you touched a commonly touched surface
  4. When you use public transportation
  5. When you are coming in from interacting outside your home or workplace

How to encourage hand hygiene in the workplace

  1. Provide hand washing stations and sanitizer posts
  2. Incorporate safety briefing/reminders in meetings
  3. Display safety posters as visible reminders, www.WHO.int has samples
  4. Train staff on the right way to turn on and turn off water taps to ensure it’s not a “virus hub”

Always remember, your safety is your personal responsibility.
