How Safe is your Vacation Location?

How Safe is your Vacation Location?
July 24, 2017 Ulomka

It’s that time of the year again, Summer. You want to take yourself or family away to relieve the stress. Have you thought about the safety of that vacation location? Did you know there are certain vacation spots that are known for robbery, organ harvesting, kidnapping and so much more? Have you considered how you would stay safe even if you still proceed on vacation?

Most times, we just plan for vacations without considering this angle but this is also important. Even if you are going to your village or to another state in the country, have you done a little research to see what is going on there at the moment? Have you prepared for actions to take in the event of an unexpected occurrence? This should not be left to chance, we’ve got to be proactive about our safety and that of our loved ones.

How then can you be safe during your vacation?

I know you just want to relax and have fun right? But if you do not do your homework well, your vacation might just end up turning to something else. You definitely do not want that.

Do some research

If this is the first time you are going to that location, ask questions. Find out from someone who has been there on their experiences, not just the good stuff but the bad stuff too. If you cannot access someone, then go online. Find out about security, transportation choices, accommodation choices, feeding, religion and dressing at your chosen location. Ignorance might not save you. There have been cases of punishment due adultery, picking artefacts or drinking alcohol. You do not want that. Know what obtains at your chosen vacation spot then make a decision to adhere or change your choice.

Plan Ahead

So, you have decided to go ahead to the vacation spot. That is fine as long as you are ready to plan. There will always be risks but planning ahead to mitigate those risks would keep you safe. Your research should arm you with information on the choice of clothing to pack, the areas to avoid, where to shop and if you’d need a pepper spray. In addition, when travelling with family members, they also need to know about the information you have gathered and how to act in different emergency situations. Educate them on the numbers to call, how to call for help and how to defend themselves. Having a plan means that you and your loved ones can act effectively in any emergency.

Try to fit in

Now, you’re at your vacation location. Everything is really looking good and you are glad you made the choice to come. Wait a minute! Are you fitting in or are you sticking out? You should know that just as you were looking forward to travelling, some people on ground your location are also looking forward to unsuspecting tourists they can prey on. Therefore you need to be aware of your environment always. Is there someone you keep seeing wherever you go? Are you displaying too much cash and jewellery? As much as possible, you need to blend into your environment, to shake such people off your trail. This does not mean you shouldn’t have fun but you know when you are pushing it. Do not let down your guard.

Be careful of food and drinks

One of the fun aspects of vacation is the opportunity to try new food and drink. While this is awesome you need to check where and whom you are getting stuff from. This is one medium through which people get drugged, robbed and raped. If you are aware of your environment, you can actually tell when it is unsafe to receive food and drinks. There are ways to avoid eating or drinking without coming across as rude. You need to be alert and watchful.

Going on vacation shouldn’t have to cause trepidation. As long as you have planned ahead and you take time to observe safety precautions, you’d have a safe holiday. Even if you are not travelling anywhere now, it doesn’t hurt to gain more knowledge. This could help your family and friends or even you on future trips.

Have a beautiful Summer.
