If you’ve been told to work from home, have you planned how to go about your work safely? In your workplace this might have been done for you but now you’ve got to do this yourself. For some people, this might be the first time they will work from home or the first time they will work from home for long periods whilst still trying to deliver on schedules as if they are working from the office. Here are a few pointers to ensure you are safe as you work remotely:
- Dedicated workspace
You need to set up a dedicated workspace. Ensure it is clean and remove cables (Laptop cords, extension box cables etc.) from walkways to prevent falls. Do not overload sockets and turn off equipment not in use for electrical safety. Ensure your exits are clear and the area is well ventilated.
- Manage ergonomic concerns
This refers to adapting the workspace to fit the human who would use it. Ensure your workspace is set up in such a way that your body is protected. The choice of furniture should not introduce body pain hours later. For inappropriate seats, improvise with throw pillows to avoid lower back pain. Also, arrange your computer, work tools and tasks such that things are within reach and you do not have to twist, bend or over reach.
- Breaks/Time management
Do not forget yourself and stay stuck to the workspace. You would need short breaks to eat or use the restroom or just love around a bit. Also, do not think you have all the time in the world and take too long breaks. You won’t get any meaningful work done.
- Stay Hydrated
Do not forget to drink lots of water. I would suggest you have water in a spill proof container in your workstation so you can take sips from time to time.
- Manage children
Try to set up your workstation in a space that gives you some privacy. If this is not possible, ensure that nothing puts them at risk of a fall or electrocution if they get into your workspace. It would be great to have rules for them so they can support you to do your work.
P.S: I just finished a one on one online strategy session with a client who wants to become a child safety professional on how to start, execute and scale across countries. If this interests you, send an email to hello@thesafetychic.com
