Did you know that yearly, February 9th is set aside as “Safer Internet Day”?
This day is geared at promoting safe and positive use of the internet for all users especially for children and young people. With education, entertainment and almost all aspects of life being hosted on the internet, it is important that we all work together to ensure it is a safe and positive space for all. This will reduce the risks and mental health challenges associated with internet use.
Increase your knowledge on best practices to ensure online safety. Today, this week and all year round, several events with experts will hold on this issue. Learn and practice what you learn. Remember, you cannot give what you do not have.
2) Empower others
As you learn, you must determine a way to cascade this information to others because we must work together for a safer internet. Teach your children, siblings, parents, friends, colleagues, social media communities etc. It’s really important to teach our children online safety early because they are in a digital world
3) Model good behaviour
Be the change you want to see in the online world. Be respectful, courteous, helpful and positive as you deal with others on the internet. Protect your online reputation and that of others.
4) Create safe spaces on the internet
If you develop and design platforms that people will use online regularly most especially young people, you must commit to including features that ensure protection and safety.
5) Good governance and child protection strategies
Governance and legislation should reflect child protection strategies to ensure safety in a digital world. There should also be a system of incorporating online safety, digital and media literacy in school work in order to raise empowered and digitally resilient children.
A safe and positive internet is possible when we all work together. Share with others.
